The Department of Family Medicine at Providence Health Care is rooted in the organization’s long tradition of community-based, compassionate care in Vancouver. While Providence Health Care itself was formally established as a unified organization in 2000, its origins date back to 1894 with the founding of St. Paul’s Hospital by the Sisters of Providence.
Family Medicine at Providence evolved alongside these institutions, developing to meet the needs of diverse and often underserved populations—particularly in inner-city Vancouver. Over time, it became an integral part of Providence’s academic and clinical mission, working closely with University of British Columbia to support teaching, residency training, and interdisciplinary care.
